The Ancient Grains project is an ongoing NWU strategic project to develop and support an ancient grains value chain. The focused of the project is on empowering rural subsistence farmers and creating a roadmap to small scale commercial farming as well as a broader goal of creating food security in rural African communities
The Challenge
The challenge this project sets out to address is making use of land held by traditional communities and turning it into sustainable agri businesses.
The Opportunity
- the opportunity lies in creating an integrated pathway that previously did not exist connecting indigenous knowledge, academic research, community- ased production, product development and commercial market access within one coordinated programme.
- This makes it possible to move ancient grains beyond small-scale or fragmented use and position them as viable inputs for food innovation, rural enterprise development, improved nutrition and sustainable agricultural value chains.
